IBP Education Abroad Tips by Classification
It's never too early to start planning your education abroad experience!
Freshman:
Save the IDS 297 course from the General Education Cultural Competence requirement to use during an education abroad program. This can also satisfy your COB Globalization requirement.
Take COB Admission courses as quickly as possible.
Save a few General Education courses for junior and senior semesters.
Meet with IBP at least one year prior to the semester you expect to study abroad.
Sophomores:
Meet with IBP to discuss locations of interest.
Determine the best semester to study abroad.
Pinpoint classes in your program of study to save for the semester abroad.
Start researching destinations/programs.
Obtain a U.S. passport, if needed.
Juniors:
* IBP recommends studying abroad during the junior year, after earning admission to COB and completing the foundation courses (MGT 340, MKT 350, FIN 380).
Identify school/location for program.
Start application process with MSU and program provider.
Identify courses to take abroad and request preapprovals.
Seniors:
* Full semester study abroad is not recommended for the final semester of any program
Consider a short-term faculty directed program instead.
Verify the program will offer a class that fulfills a degree requirement.
Apply early to hold your spot in the program.
